One of the biggest problems that society has and has had in the past is not asking why. When we see the news and see what is happening around the world we usually don't ask why. Yet, it is one of the basic things that humans need to do, that is to ask why and think critically in situations and analyse. The children in school often go and gain knowledge but don't think critically and ask themselves why. Why the world is the way it is, why there is segregation, racism, exploitation, terrorism, sexism, wars, crime, hate, etc. If we don't ask why and ignore the cause of that knowledge, we become the opposite of critical thinkers, we become ignorant. Paulo Freire had this idea that people need to question why we learn the knowledge we learn. In chapter 2 of his reading he explains his philosophy of education which involves the teacher and the student. He explains how education can either be used to oppress people or liberate them from the oppressors. One quote that Freire wrote was: “Problem-posing education does not and cannot serve the interest of the oppressor: No oppressive order could permit the oppressed to begin to question: Why?” (86) He says that education is something that would benefit the oppressor because he/she will start to ask "why?" and it would make them realize the situation, which is a start towads their liberation. The question “Why” is very important towards an individual’s liberation because it questions the oppressor and the reason why they are being oppressed. Asking why is a critical thing that every human should do on all circumstances because it makes you think critical and outside the box.
